The coronavirus pandemic has already killed more than 415k people worldwide and directly affected all major sporting events on the planet. What started as a problem-focused on China, has ended up exploding in the world. The coronavirus pandemic crosses all latitudes affecting sport and others that influence everyday life.
Some sports that had changed in the 2020 calendar because of Covid-19 are:
International football has been affected mainly by Covid-19 cases. Matches from various championships (the Copa America, the Euro and national football championships) around the world have been postponed or will be held with closed gates. Another significant issue is regarding the Euro 2020. It is scheduled for 2021.
Another major sport event is cricket. It is also affected worldwide due to corona pandemic. With it, T-20 games have been postponed. All the other major cricket events have been cancelled.
- Boxing and Basketball Championship
The Pre-Olympic boxing for Tokyo Olympic is suspended. All the significant events of IBF (International Basketball Federation) has been cancelled. The NBB will have games with closed gates, and the 3×3 Pre-Olympic basketball has been postponed.
- Formula 1
The Australian Grand Prix has been cancelled. Before the decision was announced, a McLaren employee had tested positive for the coronavirus, and the team had given up competing in the race. The GPs in Bahrain, Vietnam and China have been postponed.
The World Surfing League cancelled all events that have not yet started. This includes the opening stage of the World Circuit. No decision was made. The opening stage of the World Surfing Circuit has been cancelled.
A message from the athletes to their fans –
The sports industry has indeed been severely affected due to this pandemic. Several famous athletes had positive cases. Some of them died. And the number is still rising. Apart from this nightmare, the athletes around the world have a universal message for their fans. They ask us to “LISTEN TO OUR GOVERNMENT”. The fans have positive thinking: this situation will soon be over. The sports industry is also optimistic. But, the economic loses the sports industry is facing right now will take years to recover. All the other branches related to sport, such as broadcasting, commercials, and match day revenue are poorly affected. It seems the whole world is standing still.
Games without the presence of fans –
The pandemic of the new coronavirus forced humanity to stop. In the world of high-performance sports, it is no different. One of the elements that draw the most attention in high-performance sport is the absence of fans in sports courts. Games with closed gates and the players without hugging each other to celebrate the goal: can anyone imagine such cruelty?
However, it is expected to start the journey again from the end of the second quarter of this year. But, this is clearly an assumption by sports lovers. As all the major sports are postponed, there is a little chance that fans can see their favourite rivalry on the ground.
But we can hope that everything will go normal soon.
